Uni-ball is a brand of pen distributed by the Uni Mitsubishi Pencil Company Limited. Originally founded in 1887 as the “Masaki Pencil Manufacturing Company” in Tokyo, the company renamed itself “The Mitsubishi Pencil Company” after World War II. They released their first ballpoint pen in 1959, and later began creating performance pens. In 1979, they launched the first “Uniball” rollerball pen, which was the first ballpoint pen to use water-based ink and a metallic tip. This innovative pen quickly became popular in Europe and North America. Today, uni-ball pens are still produced in Japan.
